At any given point in the day my browser shows a sea of tabs all competing for prime real estate on my laptop monitor. My bookmarks are equally cluttered despite my intention to someday tidy them up. Between these two little habits of mine it’s easy to lose track of a website, unless they have a favicon.

You do know what a favicon is, don’t you? It’s that cute little picture that sits next to your site’s name in a browser tab or whenever someone bookmarks your site in their browser.

Why do you need one? Well, for one thing they help your site stand out more distinctly. They’re also an excellent way to reinforce your blog’s branding.

You only need three things to add a favicon to your blog:

1. An image file saved onto your hard drive. Most of you probably already have a picture you’re using in your site’s header. If you don’t have a local copy (and, really, you should keep a backup of your blog on your computer), then right-click your image in your blog header and save it. Edit as needed to remove any text.

2. Visit the free favicon maker and upload your image. You have the option to choose a scrolling, animated version but I don’t recommend it.

3. Once your favicon is generated, follow the on-screen instructions to save and upload the favicon folder to your hosting site then insert

into your header.php file between the and tags.

That’s it!

The next time you load your page your favicon should show up in the browser tab. If you don’t see it, try flushing your cache (F5) and reloading the page.
